Neptunalia: Celebrating the Roman God of the Sea

Every year on 23 July, the ancient Romans held a special two-day festival called Neptunalia to honour Neptune, the powerful god of the sea, horses, and freshwater.

What Was Neptunalia?

Neptunalia was a joyful summer festival. People would build huts from branches and leaves for shade, enjoy picnics, and make offerings to Neptune to ensure good water supplies and safe seas during the hot, dry months.

It was a time of fun, relaxation, and gratitude for the natural world — the perfect ancient Roman way to beat the summer heat!
